 We meet Oh Sun Mi, the CEO of Share Korealast September 11th at J-Space in the Jeju Center for Creative Economy and Innovation. I have also met her in the Jeju Daum program last July. I heard that she was in Jeju with an opportunity to be here again. I wanted to hear in details about how it is on her second month at Jeju and how she is doing with her work. Today and also on last July, Share Korea, films the different places of Jeju to promote it to the Chinese. We decided to listen to the story on how the company started.



# Sharing Korea

Sun-Mi Oh  After graduating college, I spent my 4 years in China. Then I came back to Korea and worked for an online shopping related work and unknowingly, I became a 10 year experienced professional at this field. Ive seen a lot of people who have been struggling with the domestic market downturn in the past 10 years by meeting with small and medium-sized merchants. But the struggle was not due to lack of their talents. Ive naturally faced the reality of the downturn which was caused by either they lost the market to the big corporations or lack of funds. As Ive been thinking on how to help them, I came across with the Chinese tourists. Then I decided to create my own company to provide an opportunity to show the real side of Korea to them and find a link between a Korean small merchants and the growing individual travelers and improve the quality of Korean tourist products.


 With the meaning of Sharing Korea, the Share Korea was created to inform the real side of Korea to the Chinese tourists. Im promoting various places (business) and products of Korea on Korean/Chinese online sites and posting videos related to travelling on 3 Chinese online sites and blogs.


1.    Chinese video content production and online marketing.

A.    Produce video in Chinese with the concept Koreans tour guide in Korea

B.     Secure/utilize Chinese online video sites (v.qq, youku, tudou, leTV, etc.)

C.    Post at the Chinese online travel blogs (Ctrip, Baidu, etc.), China marketing

2.    Travel package development for Chinese individual travelers.

A.    Plan and proceed Piano Master class for Chinese students

3.    Jeju product sales platform plans in preparation

A.    Planning on the online platform to introduce and sell products that could only be found in Jeju

     (souvenir, specialties, craftwork, etc.)

 Before she came to Jeju where there are many Chinese tourists, she has been working for the Chinese. Also, when I personally asked questions about the language, she was so proficient in explaining without any hindrance.

 

 

# Long relationship with China

 


Sun-Mi Oh Where should I start? Ever since I was young, I had a business mindset so I went to a commercial high school without even thinking about going to college. After I graduated high school, I entered into a company that was not so bad after all but I faced the reality of the society at that time which was about the difference between those who graduated college and those who did not. So I worked for about a year in that company and went back to study and entered the college.


 With the personality I have, a lot of experience and challenge was the goal for my twenties. After graduating college, I was working hard for about a year and a half in a mid-sized company but as I have been working for the same tasks repetitively with no new works, I got a little bored with the job. I wasnt good in English so I want to take this opportunity to learn English and wanted to go to the Philippines. But my friend said Do you think you can learn English which you couldnt do it for the past 10 years by going to the Philippines? and suggested me to go to China to learn Chinese. So I went straight to China and studied for a year and planned to return to Seoul right away. But once again, with my friends suggestion, I got a job in China.

 

 The style of CEO Oh Sun Mi was clearly showed in the way she makes a decision or on her way making a direction with just one offer by her friend. She was practicing her goals, which is to experience and challenge, without any hesitation.

 

Sun-Mi Oh Shortly thereafter, I received an offer from my friend once again. She was working for Dell computer and asked me to have an interview saying that the neighborhood of the office is clean and the environment was good for working. So I did a phone interview with the manager of the team that Ill be working for. He suddenly asked me to sell something through the phone. At first I confidently said I dont have anything to sell. But he told me to sell anything so I explained the DVD player which was in front of me. I got the job with the recommendation of my friend and the manager, who seemed to have liked my answer.

 

When I first started work, the manager asked me It is a 100m speed marathon here, can you do that? and I remember answering so confidently, It would be fun! I like it. Luckily, I was able to settle in quickly and worked for a year and a half. I met Myung Ok at this work too. However, after 3 years and 7 months in China, I returned to Korea to recover as my bronchial was not feeling good so good.

 Now I decided to do something that I want to do. So I jumped into an online startup business where I could start without any capital. Things worked out well than I have expected. I went to give a lecture as a successful startup entrepreneur and received a feedback that I was good at lecturing. So for a while, Ive been doing lectures on online startup business. As I was only having lectures, I got to stop at one point due to my health issues. I couldnt live without any work so I entered into a graduate school (online shopping MBA program). I think thats how I constantly worked on an online related work for years. When I was ready at some point, my sister who was working in a Chinese related industry said there is no proper expert on Chinese marketing and gave me the opinion that I would do well. So thats how I started doing the work I am doing today. The storys quite long, right?

 

 Certainly she has a deep relationship with China. Thanks to the background experience at China, she knew better than anyone else on what the Chinese tourists who come to Jeju needs and on what direction should we interact with them. Thats why Share Korea, as it is named, was possible. What was the reason for her to participate in the Jeju Daum program when she was already working with her staffs in Seoul?

 

 

# A proper trip, real Korea

 
Sun-Mi Oh I had many worries as Chinese marketing was something that I was not taught by somebody else. I was thinking wont it work by applying the online marketing I have been doing in Korea to China? and thought of on how to approach this. Then I decided to post on blogs with videos the contents about Korean trips. And when I did this for a year, I had a meeting with the staffs and said lets do a real business this time as the past works were about understanding the Chinese market. We were thinking based on our experience throughout the years on what the Chinese people need and thought of an efficient item that would help the travel pattern of the Chinese tourist, which was shopping.

 

 This was a business item that could help the tourists who spend all their time in buying gifts to have their trip more like a tour. I researched if there was any business that has the same system and Xiamen, an island in China (island that has similar features with Jeju) started this kind of system already with good results. China definitely has this need. So it would be great to have this in Jeju! That was the first time I thought of Jeju Island. We would like to research more and refine the ideas while staying in Jeju as well as making contents while filming around the place. So thats how I get to apply for Jeju Daum.

 Her stay in Jeju for a month in July has not only helped her business but must have developed it as well. She returned to this place with Bae Myung Ok again.

 

 

Sun-Mi Oh I saw the potential while staying at Jeju Daum in July. I was convinced that my business suits this place. In August, I was in Seoul organizing the documents and wanted to build an infrastructure in Jeju. So I applied again. I also participated in the Pitching Day in August at this place (Jeju Center for Creative Economy and Innovation). I pitched my business item and thankfully I was selected as the excellent idea and became an incubator company of the Creative Economy and Innovation Center starting from September 1st. I think I have confirmed the possibility on this business enough.

# Lying at the café in Jeju

 

 

 Share Korea has three employees and one of them visited Jeju at the mid of July. And I also saw that you occasionally contact each other and work continuously. Some of them were working apart from the rest, basically remote working. I wonder if there were any difficulties while you were in Jeju.

 

Sun-Mi Oh In my case, we need materials and contents about Jeju. To stay in Seoul and travel to Jeju for work causes issue on expenses as there is no accommodation or an office. But thanks to Jeju Daum, where they provide office and an accommodation, it is more efficient as I only have to pay for the plane ticket. That was the greatest advantage for me to participate in Jeju Daum.


 In the case of remote working, we may be able to do this because it is a small organization. But our roles have become clearer while working over the past years. Even without my involvement, we get to do our own work within a fixed period of time. We can work without being in the same space because the work is done in a regular order. For example, if Myung Ok shoots in Jeju and shares the file, Young Seong (head of video contents) in Seoul receives and edits it. In the meantime, Myung Ok plans the next story and works on additional subtitles as well as posting. It proceeded efficiently without any problems or restrictions while I was in Jeju. In fact, when I first founded the Share Korea, Myung Ok and I worked in cafes at Gangnam. We had this regular café we went to and we were the first customer every day. After that, I got an office, but I used to work while travelling a lot, so it seems that my work in Jeju is working well.

 

 She was already working in her own way at Seoul. I asked if there was any merit that only Jeju has or something that it is possible because it was Jeju

 

Sun-Mi Oh First of all, I rented a car on weekends and went to Aewol to eat, drink tea and worked at cafes. I was able to concentrate very well.

 She meant that she worked and travelled at the same time. Obviously, it is something that is difficult to find in Seoul and also it was a figure of a digital nomad that we often talk about. Bae Myung Ok, who was sitting right next to me from the middle of the interview, also said a word.

 

Myung-Ok Bae The prerequisite is to sleep there. We lay down and slept at the café. It was really good.

 

Sun-Mi Oh The work was better after resting. The efficiency went up. Myung Ok also said that it was possible because it was Jeju and that it was really good. I stayed alone at the pension in Aewol during August and I got to talk to the owner of that pension about my job while having a conversation. Then he said that he is also working with China and wanted to talk with me. So we talked while having a tea and naturally I got a cooperative company. I think Jeju has many cases such as this. When you tell them I do this kind of work and then the counterpart would say Oh, I do this kind of work too. We could this part together! This process and connection works really well. I go to play and travel and then also make a business partner. It was really good to be introduced by another introduction.


 It may be difficult to start a meeting in Jeju but when that connection is made, I felt that it was very much different from the temporary meetings in Seoul. The more I listen to her story, the business mind or the item she brought and the working method of Share Korea get along well with Jeju.

 

Sun-Mi Oh Since the company is small and is used to taking care of its own work, we only have one meeting in a month. When we have the main schedule on what we will do for this month, we take care of our own tasks. You manage on what you need to do and organize your own schedule without anyone interfering.

 

 I had a strong affirmation to this story because I think this is the figure of a digital nomad. Building your own working pattern by yourself.

 

Sun-Mi Oh I think remote working and digital nomad is possible once you are able to do that.

# Special time in Jeju Island

 

 As of the interview date, there is only two weeks left on her stay. It could be a long period of time if you say so and short if short. For the last question I asked if she has anything to achieve personally or from the standpoint of the company.

 

Sun-Mi Oh Uhm, nothing personal for the moment. Companys goal is my personal goal. The goal is to build many networks related to the business we are working on. Of course, the thing I want to do the most is to eat Jjamppong at Mirado! The jjampong I ate in Mirado with Myung Ok was so good that I decided to go back in September. Also I realized in my visit on last July, there were so many places in Jeju that I did not know when I came here as a tourist. I want to share and introduce those places to people. If you come to Jeju, I would recommend you to try out Jjamppong and sweet and sour pork at Mirado first. It would only take two hours to go there! Oh, and you must go to the Songak(san) mountain Dulle-gil Trail.

 

 She was mentioning about going back to Mirado with such a happy face. So I told her to join me next time. I was going to ask for more questions but ended the interview here. Isnt the ending just like Jeju? What always need to be presented in the process of work, mindset or product is recharging. Having enough time to rest and charging oneself to accomplish the goal is the charm and gift of remote working in Jeju Island.

 On Monday July 3rd, <Digital Nomad Meet-up ‘Hello, Seogwipo!’> was held in Seogwipo. In fact, we met various people to listen to their stories and there were a lot of things to consider to weave them all together until we held this small meet-up.

 <Digital Nomad Meet-up ‘Hello, Seogwipo!’> is the first event held in Seogwipo by the Jeju Creative Economic Innovation Center (hereinafter Jeju Center). We had a desire to advance into Seogwipo last year, but the center had to give it up due to the ‘lack of demand’ and we got hesitant afterwards.


But Jeju Center started looking for a co-working space in the island as it executed ‘Remote Working Platform Development’ project this year, and what stood out was ‘Play and Rest Café, the resting space of Asia CGI Animation Center. At first it was not created as a co-working space but had infinite potential as people were trying to turn it into a co-working space. Thankfully, ‘Jeju Techno Park’ that is in charge of this place had a need for ‘Revitalizing Asia CGI Animation Center’, so Jeju Center recommended a manager to permanently stay in the co-working space.

 Seogwipo has this ‘space’ and ‘people’ who are willing to use it. But we got questioned a lot, peppered with skepticism like; ‘Does Seogwipo truly need a co-working space?’, ‘Will there be people coming once it’s created?’ J-Space in Jeju Creative Economic Innovation Center is now full of various people, but it took 2 years to draw such positive response. Thus the first meet-up to start in Seogwipo invited and gathered the digital contents-related remote workers and networkers in Seogwipo to be ‘small’ but ‘meaningful’.

 The meet-up was carried out as part of ‘Remote Working Platform Development’ project, but it was important to spread the legitimacy of this ‘Remote Working Platform Development’ project and create its atmosphere. The Information Convergence Division and Jeju Urban Regeneration Support Center of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province who heard about the meet-up on SNS participated in the event voluntarily and met and communicated with Seogwipo remote workers and networkers, adding more significance to the meet-up.

 The topics we addressed in the meet-up <Digital Nomad Meet-up, ‘Hello, Seogwipo!’> were ‘Why Seogwipo?’ and ‘Why It Must be Seogwipo’, which showed that such movement was not limited to ‘Seogwipo’ at all.

 The first presentation was led by Sansol Park who runs ‘Jeju IT Freelancer Group’. He is a networker who runs ‘Jeju IT Freelancer Group’ as well as Facebook pages ‘Seogwipo Wave’ and ‘Digital Nomads Jeju’, and is well-known to many people. The ‘Jeju IT Freelancer Group’, which he started just to make it more fun for IT developers hidden in Jeju to gather together for coding and working, now has 1,200 members already.

 

Sansol Park was the first person to be involved in the co-working space of Asia CGI Animation Center and take lead in SNS promotion. I asked a question ‘What should we do to activate this space?’ to him who should have know-hows in running a community.

 

 Sansol Park said ‘I always keep in mind ‘who are the people I most care about?’ and I try to spend more time with them. Those whom I care about the most, are my family.’ His laptop is full of family pictures; the workplace he goes to is his ‘home’ and the company he likes is ‘family’ as well. He said he’ll visit this co-working space if there are important people like the colleagues he works with. He gave a wise answer by saying that even if only one person visits the space, he will treat him/her as a precious person and that this co-working space will be filled if people become important to each other.



Seogwipo Young Guns’ Concerns over Life and Work

 Is there any more interesting company like this? Creative contents lab Kailua is a company finding solutions to help people’s lives by connecting IT and humanities in Wolpyeong, a small village where No.7 and No.8 Olle-gil of Seogwipo meet. It is currently analyzing ‘travel tendency’ as the content of beautiful Jeju, and is highly looking forward to various programs of Asia CGI Animation Center with a huge interest.

 

 Jooneui So has been usually concerned over ‘Jeju as a base’ and ‘life and work’. The Kailua Team he leads has been setting its own direction to create and protect their own value. Modules divided by the nature of each work such as development, contents, design, etc. enabled them to move in the best environment each thinks fit. The team also shares the overall flow through regular meetings and suggests opinions to support in each field, practicing remote work. The most important things for them are ‘Work-Life Balance’ and respect for individuality! They are the young guns of Seogwipo today.


 

Remote Working Platform Development Project to connect Jeju and the Mainland


<Introducing the ‘Remote Working Platform Development’ project of Jeju Creative Economic Innovation Center>


 

 The center shared the background, objective, and the future plans of ‘Remote Working Platform Development’ project it is carrying out this year with various people who attended the meet-up. This project got its idea from the review of participants in the 2016 Overseas Community Exchange Program. There were opinions such as ‘Everything about J-Space is good but it is unfortunate that it lacks natural environment that can be enjoyed only in Jeju in the surroundings’ and ‘I want to meet a local startup or community’. However, these opinions were not enough to legitimize the project, and many different aspects of Jeju were considered.

 

 Due to the geographical nature of an island, Jeju has poor accessibility (it is getting better though), but most of its talent pool flows into Seoul and it is vulnerable to external situations due to primary and tertiary industrial structures. However, Jeju has a pleasant, clean natural environment and many different leisure environments, so it is a very attractive place for remote workers, who put emphasis on the balance of life and work, to work wherever they want. The project ‘Remote Working Platform Development’ hopes to create a virtual ‘tunnel’ that connects Jeju to the outside world through it.

 

‘Remote Working Platform Development’ project induces the flow of remote workers into the island like ‘Jeju-ish’, the residence support program of Jeju Center. Instead of making remote workers to form a concentrated community in the center or J-Space, it seeks to spread them throughout the entire area of Jeju and where remote-work is available. Thus the project aims to gradually build an environment where remote-work is easy all around ‘Jeju’, not the center’, and ultimately aims to build various relationship networks of startup ecology through partnerships with co-working space to promote their interaction. 

 

As part of this project, Ahn will run a blog called ‘Remote Work in Jeju’ to provide the co-working information of Jeju remote workers and continuously update information on available spaces in Jeju for co-working and remote-work as well as the life zone. In addition, she will regularly hold events like <Digital Nomad Meet-up, ‘Hello, Seogwipo!’> or transformer that match well with the region.



From Seoul to Seogwipo, Designing a Small Change

 Open College has been conducting various experiments to solve Jeju’s problems for several years now. Why is Open College openly located in Seogwipo, where it is hard to find a single young person to work part-time? Who are the young people building life in Seogwipo following Open College and what are they doing these days? Segwang Oh, who introduced himself as a ‘Mobility Designer’, told his story with confidence.

 

 Oh is a designer who works his part time job by day and builds codes by night. He is a gap-year youth in college as well; unemployment rate, youth unemployment rate, and the actual unemployment rate were not being improved without any changes and farm labor was lacking in contrast, he realized. Based on this, young people started farming twice a week and coding three times a week as a way to be economically independent and resolve the lacking farm labor, but soon felt that it was very difficult to achieve. Removing all the hard-grown agricultural crops was better than harvesting them which would generate labor cost and loss as a result. Oh also felt the pyramid hierarchical structure of part-time-contract job-technical job-office work while working part-time in Migok Rice Processing Complex. He suggested a new way to work or arrange members for work efficiency, but felt helpless after he was told that ‘You’re just a temp, it’s not your place to talk like that.’ ‘Why do you do forklifting as a receipt assistance?’ and ‘Just do as I say’.

 

Then, Oh met ‘Open Univ’, a school to ‘design my life on my own’, and could design and practice key subjects such as ‘Entrepreneurship’, ‘Design Thinking’, and ‘Software Development’ as well as other necessary subjects on his own. He could ‘design small changes’ by putting an idea into practice fast with Open Univ members.

 

There were some things Oh needed to design such small changes’: He needed a space, people, and culture. He especially talked about the importance of horizontal culture. Even if you are 19 years old, you can talk and discuss with a person in his/her 30s holding a master’s degree on equal terms, thanks to the horizontal culture. Oh also said that cooperation and trust cultures were essential elements to form a community.

 Segwang Oh of Open Univ said <Digital Nomad Meet-up ‘Hello, Seogwipo!> was like a coral reef in the sea. Coral reefs take up a mere 2 percent of the whole ocean, but they are known to be all connected to each other. We hope July meet-up was like the coral reef of Seogwipo. Please stay tuned to see when and where Jeju Center will make other coral reefs!

 지난 73일 월요일, 서귀포시에서 <디지털노마드 밋업 헬로, 서귀포!’>를 열었습니다. 사실 이 작은 밋업을 열기까지, 다양한 사람들 만나 이야기를 들었고 잘 엮어내기 위한 고민이 있었습니다.



디지털노마드 밋업이 서귀포로 가기까지


 <디지털노마드 밋업 헬로, 서귀포!’>는 제주창조경제혁신센터(이하 제주센터)가 서귀포시에서 처음으로 연 행사입니다. 작년에도 서귀포 진출 욕심(?)은 있었으나, ‘수요자 부재로 인해 포기할 수 밖에 없었고, 그 이후에도 자주 망설였었죠.


 하지만 제주센터가 올해 리모트워킹플랫폼 구축사업을 신규 추진하면서 도내 코워킹스페이스를 찾기 시작했고 눈에 띈 곳이 바로, 아시아CGI애니메이션센터의 휴게공간인 놀멍쉬멍카페입니다. 비록 코워킹스페이스로 태어나진 않았으나, 이곳을 코워킹스페이스로 가꿔줄 사람들이 있어 그 가능성이 무궁무진한 곳이었습니다. 다행히 이 곳의 관리를 책임지고 있는 제주테크노파크에서 아시아CGI애니메이션센터의 활성화라는 니즈가 있었기에 제주센터에서 코워킹스페이스에 상주할 매니저의 추천을 하게 됐습니다

 서귀포시에도 이런 공간이 있고 활용하고자 하는 사람도 분명 있는데 서귀포시에 코워킹스페이스가 꼭 필요한가요?’, ‘생기면 오는 사람은 있을까요?’라는 회의적인 질문을 많이 받았습니다. 제주창조경제혁신센터에 있는 J-Space도 지금은 다양한 사람들로 포화상태이지만 이렇게 호응을 얻기까지는 2년이란 시간이 걸렸으니까요. 그래서 서귀포시에서 시작하게 될 첫 밋업은 작지만 의미있게열 수 있도록, 서귀포시의 디지털콘텐츠 관련 리모트워커와 네트워커들을 초청하고 모집했습니다

 ‘리모트워킹플랫폼 구축사업의 일환으로 밋업을 열긴 했으나, 리모트워킹플랫폼 구축사업의 당위성을 알리고 분위기를 형성하는 것이 중요했습니다. SNS에서 밋업 소식을 접한 제주특별자치도 정보융합담당부서와 제주도시재생지원센터에서 자발적으로 행사에 참여해, 서귀포시 리모트워커와 네트워커들을 만나고 소통하며 그 밋업의 의미가 더해졌습니다.

 


커뮤니티의 중심에서 서귀포를 외치다

 

 <디지털노마드 밋업, ‘헬로, 서귀포!’>의 주제는 단연 왜 서귀포인가왜 서귀포여야 하는가였고 이러한 움직임이 결코 서귀포로만 한정되는 것이 아님을 알 수 있던 자리였습니다.

 첫 번째 연사로 제주IT프리랜서커뮤니티을 운영중인 박산솔님이 나섰습니다. ‘제주IT프리랜서커뮤니티뿐 아니라 서귀포 웨이브’, ‘디지털노마드 인 제주라는 페이스북 페이지도 운영중일 만큼 알 만한 사람은 모두 아는 네트워커이기도 합니다. 제주에 숨어있는 IT분야 개발자가 많은데 모여서 코딩하고 일하면 재미있겠다는 생각에 가볍게 시작한 제주IT프리랜서커뮤니티이 현재는 1,200명에 달합니다.

 

 박산솔님은 아시아CGI애니메이션센터 코워킹스페이스가 오픈한 이후 가장 먼저 와서 활용을 했고 SNS홍보에도 앞장섰습니다. 커뮤니티 운영에 노하우를 가지고 있을 그에게 이 공간이 활성화 되려면 어떻게 하면 좋을까요?’라는 우문을 던졌습니다.

 

 그는 항상 내게 소중한 사람들이 누구일까?’를 생각하고 소중한 사람들과 시간을 쓰면서 살려고 노력하고 있고, 그 소중한 사람들은 가족이라고 합니다. 그의 노트북에는 가족 사진이 가득 붙어있는데요. 그가 출근하는 회사는 이고 좋아하는 회사도 가족이라고 합니다. 함께 일 하는 동료처럼 중요한 사람이 이 코워킹스페이스에 있으면 이 곳을 찾아오게 될 것이라고 합니다. 이 공간을 단 한 사람만 찾더라도 그 사람을 소중한 사람으로 대하고 서로에게 중요한 사람이 된다면 이 코워킹스페이스가 채워져 나간다라는 현답을 전했습니다.



삶과 업에 대한 서귀포 영건의 고민

 이토록 흥미로운 기업이 또 있을까요? 크리에이티브 콘텐츠 랩 카일루아는 서귀포시 올레길 7번길과 8번길이 만나는 작은 마을 월평에서 IT와 인문학을 연결해 사람들의 삶에 도움을 주는 솔루션을 찾는 기업입니다. 현재는 아름다운 제주의 콘텐츠로 여행 성향 분석을 하고 있고, 아시아CGI애니메이션센터의 다양한 프로그램에도 관심이 많아 큰 기대를 갖고 있었습니다.

 

 평소 터전으로서의 제주삶과 업에 대한 고민을 해왔던 소준의. 그런 그가 이끄는 카일루아 팀은 그들만의 가치를 만들고 지키며 그들의 방향성을 만들어가고 있었습니다. 개발, 콘텐츠, 디자인 등 각 업무의 성질로 구분된 모듈이 각자가 생각하는 최적의 환경에서 움직일 수 있게 하고, 정기회의를 통해 큰 흐름을 공유하는 동시에 각 분야에서 서포트할 수 있는 의견들을 제시하면서 리모트워크를 실행하고 있습니다서귀포 '오늘의 영건'들 답게 개성을 존중하고 일과 삶의 균형과 유연함을 추구하고 있습니다. 

 


제주와 육지를 잇는 터널, 리모트워킹플랫폼 구축 사업


<제주창조경제혁신센터 리모트워킹플랫폼 구축 사업 소개 중>



 센터에서 올해 신규 추진하는 리모트워킹플랫폼 구축사업의 추진배경과 목적, 앞으로의 행보를 밋업에 참여한 다양한 분들과 공유했습니다. 이 사업은 2016년도 해외커뮤니티교류프로그램을 진행하며 받았던 참여자들의 리뷰에서 착안했습니다. ‘J-Space는 다 좋은데 주변에 제주에서만 누릴 수 있는 자연환경이 부족해서 아쉽다현지 스타트업이나 커뮤니티를 만나고 싶다라는 의견이 있었습니다. 하지만 이 의견만으로 사업의 당위성을 만들기에는 어려움이 있었고, 제주의 다양한 면면들을 고려했습니다.

 

 제주는 섬이라는 지리적인 특성 때문에 접근성이 떨어지고(점차 좋아지고 있습니다만), 제주의 인재들은 대부분 서울로 가고, 13차 위주의 산업구조로 인해 외부상황에 취약하다는 약점이 있었습니다. 하지만 제주는 쾌적하고 청정한 자연환경과 다양한 여가환경을 갖추고 있어, 장소에 구애받지 않고 일하는 것이 가능하면서 일과 삶의 균형을 중요시 하는 리모트워커들에게 아주 매력적인 곳이기도 합니다. ‘리모트워킹플랫폼 구축사업으로 인해 제주와 제주 밖을 잇는 가상의 터널이 생겼으면 하는 것이 이 사업의 작은 바람입니다.

 

 ‘리모트워킹플랫폼 구축사업은 제주센터의 체류지원프로그램 제주다움과 비슷하게 리모트워커들의 도내 유입을 유도합니다. 대신 리모트워커들이 센터나 J-Space로 집약되게 하는 것이 아니라 제주 전역, 리모트워크가 가능한 곳이면 어디든 확산시키고자 합니다. 그래서 센터가 아닌 제주를 중심으로 리모트워크가 용이한 환경을 점진적으로 구축하고, 이들의 교류를 촉진할 수 있도록 코워킹스페이스와 제휴를 통해 궁극적으로는 스타트업 생태계의 다양한 관계망을 만들어가고자 합니다.

 

 이 사업의 일환으로 리모트워크 인 제주블로그를 운영하며 제주의 리모트워커들의 코워킹 정보를 제공하고, 제주지역의 코워킹스페이스 등 리모트워크가 가능한 공간과 생활권에 대한 정보를 지속적으로 업데이트할 예정입니다. <디지털노마드 밋업, ‘헬로, 서귀포!’>와 같이 공간과 지역에 어울리는 트랜스포머와 같은 이벤트를 주기적으로 열어갈 예정입니다.



서울에서 서귀포까지, 작은 변화를 디자인하다

 오픈컬리지는 몇 년 전부터 제주의 문제를 해결하는 다양한 실험들을 해왔습니다. 아르바이트로 일해 줄 청년 한 명 구하기 어려운 서귀포에 오픈컬리지가 왜 버젓이 자리하고 있는걸까요? 그런 오픈컬리지를 따라 서귀포까지 와서 삶을 꾸려나가는 청년들은 누구고 어떻게 지내고 있는걸까요? 자신을 ‘Mobility Designer’라고 소개한 오세광님이 자신있게 그의 이야기를 들려줬습니다.

 

 그는 낮에는 일하고 밤에는 코딩하는 주경야코디자이너입니다. 그는 대학시절 갭이어청년이기도 했는데요. 실업률, 청년실업률, 체감실업률은 별다른 변화 없이 개선되고 있지 않았고, 반대로 농업인력은 부족하다는 실정을 알았습니다. 이에 착안해, 청년들이 경제적으로 자립하면서도 부족한 농업인력을 해소할 수 있는 방법으로 주 2회 농사일을 하고, 3회 코딩을 하기 시작했지만 곧, 이것이 매우 어렵다는 것을 체감했다고 합니다. 애써 키운 농작물들을 다 밀어버리는 것이 수확을 했을 때 인건비가 나와 적자가 나는 것보다 더 나았기 때문입니다. 또 그는 미곡종합처리장에서 아르바이트를 하면서 아르바이트-계약직-기능직-사무직이라는 피라미드 계급 구조를 느끼게 됐는데요. 업무 효율을 위해 구성원 배치나 새로운 업무방식을 제안했으나 알바가 무슨 말이 그렇게 많냐’, ‘넌 접수 보조인데 무슨 지게차를 하냐’, ‘그냥 시키는 대로 해라라는 말을 듣고 무기력감을 느꼈다고 합니다.


 그러던 중 나의 삶을 직접 디자인 하는 학교오픈유니브를 만났고 기업가 정신,’ 디자인 씽킹‘’, ‘소프트웨어 개발등 주요과목과 별도 필요한 과목은 직접 디자인하고 실행해볼 수 있었다고 합니다. 아이디어가 있으면 오픈유니브 멤버들과 빠르게 실행해보면서 작은 변화디자인할 수 있었죠.

 

 그런 작은 변화를 디자인하기 위해서 필요한것들이 있었습니다. 공간, 사람, 문화가 필요하고 특히 수평문화의 중요성을 이야기했습니다. 나이가 열아홉이더라도 수평문화가 있어 석사 출신의 30대와도 수평으로 이야기하고 토론할 수 있었다고 합니다. 또 협력문화와 신뢰문화가 커뮤니티를 형성해 나가는데 꼭 필요한 요소라고 이야기했습니다.



바다 속 2% 산호초, 디지털노마드 밋업 헬로, 서귀포!’

 

 오픈유니브 오세광님은 <디지털노마드 밋업 헬로, 서귀포!>가 바다 속 산호초와 표현했습니다. 산호초는 바다에 2%밖에 안되지만 모두가 연결되어 있다고 하죠. 7월의 밋업이 서귀포의 산호초와 같았기를 바라며 제주센터가 언제 어디에서 또 다른 산호초를 만들어나갈지 기대해주세요!

 Seung-pil Choi developed service for travel because he likes trip and developing chatbot because he wants to research on big data. He was actually widely well-known person. “Is the developer of <Tripgrida> coming to Jeju?” Do you know why did he come?

 

 

J-Space You have participated to <Lunch (Learn-chi)-hap-si-da(the mentoring program of J-CCEI)>, which is a mentoring program of Jeju Center for Creative Economy and Innovation, you are really popular that people surrounded you.

 

Seung-pil Choi Maybe I am popular in Jeju. I think Jeju has a good power. From the mentor I met in <Lunch (Learn-chi)-hap-si-da(the mentoring program of J-CCEI)>, it is not a plan for operation but I was asked to send what kind of service I am working on, but I couldn’t send it yet because I had to make the presentation material for the last networking for stay application program. (laugh)

 

J-Space It goes to show that the artificial intelligence and chatbot are the key word among people these days. What was your motivation to be interested in the field?

 

Seung-pil Choi I was already doing it even before the fight between Sae-dol Lee and AlphaGo. It only became popular after Sae-dol Lee and AlphaGo have played go. However, research on the artificial intelligence was continually done even prior to that. People didn’t know about artificial intelligence before but because of the popular go game, it became an issue. I was preparing for a data based trip service called <Tripgrida>. I was developing a service that suggests customized trip spot for individual and applying it to a conversational interface called chatbot. When we were developing it, no one understood this field. Every time I introduce it, I mentioned about applying the conversational interface function and usually, people asked me I don’t know what you want to do, are you making service for a trip, or what? However, when Google came up with the artificial intelligence technology and along with the fourth industrial revolution, it became a trend these days. Platforms like Facebook and Line began to offer chatbot function and it is becoming popularized. It is a good timing for us. We originally planned to do it and create a new one but now we just have made use of the existing platforms like the Facebook messenger. That’s why it is a good timing for us because we don’t have to make it anymore but make use of the existing ones. People show their interest on it first this time saying is this what you guys are doing.

 

 A Chatbot is a trend of this era. For instance, WeChat of China has everything without having to download an additional mobile application, like payment transactions and all. The reason why we thought of the conversational interface was that we were thinking of ways to expand our service. These days, application download rates are decreasing and even being downloaded there are more numbers for it gets deleted and only using the necessary ones like Kakaotalk and Facebook messenger. So we thought that if we apply the mobile application we developed to the conversational interface, it would be better because people don’t have to download an additional application and the users don’t have to try to adjust to the new interface. In fact, we had an app and we did a field test in Vietnam last year with it but the result showed that people won’t use it because it is too difficult to use. We made it but even we found it complicated to use. So could think of attaching it to the conversational interface while segregating it by its functions and lessening it.

 

 While developing chatbot by its function, repeated operations appeared. To try to make them simpler, we developed a function that makes the repeated operation simpler. We call it builder. With the builder, even the people without the knowledge of coding can create chatbot, without having to deal with coding. Nowadays, a specific company for an outside order is making chatbot. However, with the builder, a company or an individual can make chatbot so we would like to make it possible later. In fact, right now, to use chatbot in a business has limitations with regards to its scope. Nonetheless, there are still enough possibilities. Therefore, I would like to test it in Jeju, about its possibilities. Not following the trend but I think it’s being processed naturally.

J-Space You were invited to be a judge for international competition being held by Institute of APEC Collaborative Education.

 

Seung-pil Choi I know a person from Indonesia whom I met while I was on a trip. I got to know him by helping him out when he was in a trouble. He introduced someone he knows from Korea and that person was from the Institute. I think he saw how I handled the process. So he recommended me after seeing what the things I was doing. It is an international competition targeting students from Asia Pacific region and I was offered to be a judge. At that time I refused because I had to judge in English. Then they offered again for the second time and this time they offered it with a translator but I refused again.

 

 I want to talk about this stuff because actually at that time my heart was closed. I’ve been working alone and I wasn’t sure whether what I was doing is a right thing to do. I wasn’t in a position to judge someone as well. Though it was a great offer, I thought to myself ‘can I do it?’ because I was closed. However, in Jeju, many people were interested in what I am doing and I began to think that perhaps what I was doing could be helpful for others and even though I was not good at it, but there could still be people in need of my service. Then slowly I opened my mind. Recently, they offered for the third time and this time, the offer was even better and I said I would do it. So, I will be participating the competition as a judge for technology in Busan in August this year.

 

J-Space You opened your heart in Jeju. Your service and people you meet, they are all realated to travel. I think you like travelling.

 

Seung-pil Choi After I resigned from a company…

 

J-Space You used to work at a company? (suspiciously asking)

 

Seung-pil Choi I used to. I was an employee. When I resigned, I got my backpack with me and went around with the money I saved while working. That was my dream. The memory of backpacking trip when I went after finishing my military duty helped me go through my 20s, and it was a gift for my to face my 30s. I planned it to be a year but I came back after 6 months. It wasn’t just a trip but rather it was more like a field test that I checked many things while on a trip. It was more like a market research. I thought to myself that ‘I am not here to just enjoy’. I only use wifi and even in Seoul, I use wifi, because <Tripgrida> has its purpose to be a global service and we can use the internet anywhere in Korea but in abroad, there are many places without access to the internet. I tried to connect wifi in Jaisalmer desert in India and while climbing Annapurna. I tested it, made memos and went around while conceptualizing how I should develop it when I go back to Korea. When I was on my way down from Annapurna, I heard the news that my father had collapsed so I immediately went back to Korea and took care of him for a year at a hospital. The services I wanted to make were not available before but while taking care of my father, many of them were made available by others. It goes to know individual trip became more popular and many people felt of need of it. The made available services couldn’t stop me and I thought to myself that there’s nothing I can do about it and I have plenty of time so I began to make the things I planned thinking that I will learn from it.

 

 I only talked about service. I like going on a trip. The top 5 things in my bucket list were in fact about trips. I have done the list from 1 to 5 after I resigned from my previous work, and they were going on a backpacking trip alone, staying in a foreign country for a month, climbing up Annapurna, and watching starts at a desertbut there’s one thing I failed and that is to get married before turning to 32 years old2 years have passed already.

 

J-Space Since you’re saying you like going on a trip and you’ve been doing it for a long time, I would like to know more about your travel stories.

 

Seung-pil Choi I went on a trip for 6 months after resigning from company. I was in Thailand before I went to Annapurna and I happened to meet someone on the way. I like going on a trip but also I am very interested in the environment and issues of the local area where I am visiting. About the elephant tracking in Thailand, I heard that the elephants are being raised their whole life with torture so I didn’t want to try it anymore. So I decided to visit elephant environmental park where there are injured abandoned elephants and the elephants are being cured in that park. I should pay the same amount of money for both elephant tracking and visit the Elephant environmental park and if it’s the same price then I wanted to go to the place where I can help the elephants be healed. At the park, you are buying the medicine for them with the entrance fee and giving it to them. I was talking about it with boys younger than me whom I met on a tour, and at that time someone at our back suddenly offered to buy us beer. He bought 2 bottles for us.

 

 That place was called Pai and it is a small village. I wanted to treat him back if I meet him again and I met him the next day coincidentally. So we arranged an appointment and met again at night. I learned that what we were talking about the other day was called a fair trip. We talked a lot about trips and he said he was going on a trip a lot and it was really good to hear from young people genuinely talking about the fair trip and that was the reason why he offered to buy us beer. He asked me where I wanted to be on my last trip and I answered my dream was to climb up Annapurna. I thought only professionals could climb Annapurna. However he said, “I want the end of your trip to be for dream” I was like a line from a drama, but what’s more amazing was that a team was formed on the spot. He called to China and Korea and made a team, just because of me. Actually, he used to do tracking at Himalaya. We promised to meet after 2 months and said bye to each other. We climb up the mountain for 10 days. I cried when I saw the stars from the base camp of Annapurna. I still think it's a dream. I thought I gained everything from that moment but it was not. I fulfilled my dream to go to Annapurna. I was on my way back joyfully and that’s when I saw I got 70 missed calls. I felt something was wrong. I called back to Korea and heard that my father collapsed. I was hopeless. There is no domestic flight from Nepal so I to go to Katmandu through Taxi paying $100. I went over the snowy mountain by Taxi. Then, I came back to Korea through China. I made my way back home with the devastating heart because I had the thought that it could be the last time with my father. Then I took care of my father for a year in a hospital after came back to Korea and <Tripgrida> was made while taking care of my father.

J-Space Trip service <Tripgrida> fits you. You worked alone for 4 years.

 

Seung-pil Choi I worked on a nursing bed for a year in the hospital. After he came back home, he is still having a hard with walking so I couldn’t be out of the house, either. I thought I have to take care of home at home so for a while I developed it at home alone. There was an offer to me and even I did an interview. However, the working place was in abroad so I couldn’t take it. The place where I interviewed needed a developer for them to launch a business platform in Thailand. Since I stayed in Thailand for 3 months and handling trip service individually I was recommended and that’s how I could get to the interview, but I couldn’t go because I had to take care of my father.

 

 After that, I became close to the person who interviewed me and I met him again after 1 year while developing it at home. At that time, he asked me ‘Isn’t it hard to concentrate at home?’. Actually other developers would be the same that we wake up during late hours, work quietly and go to sleep at around 6 am or 7 am and wake up at 11 am. There was not enough me time. Then my father has pity on me because from TV he hears news about young people’s unemployment issue and here comes his son doing computer overnight. He looked at me then, TV and had a sad look. I couldn’t tell him that I am actually preparing something because there was no achievement yet. Understanding my situation, the interviewer suggested me to work at a café and gave me a gift card for me to use at the cafe to work for 3 months. Later on, when my cellphone was broken, he even bought me a new phone saying that a developer should have a working cellphone. His intention was, you try it for 3 months and then if it’s not working, go back to the company. Maybe he wanted to work with me but I think he has given up now. I didn’t go to Starbucks usually and instead went to cafes that offered coffee in a lower price but, since he gave me the gift card from Starbucks, I became a luxurious guy. (laughing)

 

 Nonetheless, I think it was even better to work in a café. I stayed at a hospital for a year and stayed at home for a year so I felt like I have a depression and socio phobia but I couldn’t reveal it, worrying that it might be an obstacle when taking care of my father. However, I could overcome it in café. At first, when people were sitting in a café, I couldn’t sit in between but as time went back I took the courage to sit and now I feel at home at café. After that, I worked in a café for 2 years and I didn’t look for an office, that’s because I have no income and just using the saved money. I go to café at 11 am and go back home at 11 pm. The manager likes me a lot because I use the table clean. I also help to close the café together. People could have teased me wondering, who is he come to café and help to close together?

 

 I began by myself but now I am doing it with a like-minded friend. We are both doing a remote working in each other’s region. We hate to be intervened.

 

J-Space Is it possible to be there the whole day?

 

Seung-pil Choi Actually it’s a public harm and money spent for coffee is burdensome. To prolong this without any income, I unintentionally become not good. So I asked the employee there but the employee said it’s okay and I don’t have to worry about it. Then I became friends with them and one of them was a student from Engineering so from time to time that student sits beside me talking about concerns of future, asks me about homework and study together. I don’t really know about coffee so I order Americano every day and one day, they were recommending me to try other types of coffee and explained them to me. I think I wasn’t too bad or maybe it’s just my illusion

 

 Starbucks in Mangdon is special. There are many people living alone and many of them are developers, designers, and photographers. Also, there are start-ups in Hongdae and Hapjeong areas. There are a lot of 1 person director, 1 person developer and 1 person producer. Unlike other Starbucks branches, in here there are a lot of them like me. I sometimes feel solidarity with them but I couldn’t talk to them because I am shy. There are some whom I saw every day for years and they were in the field of creative works. I was hesitant to go to the café at first was but after knowing the fact that there are many like me, I say I am going to work to Starbucks. When I am late than usual the employees say ‘oh you are late today’. Café managers are like coworking space manager that they take care of the customers really well. When I said I am going to Jeju, I was given a gift and a letter. It made my heart beat, but from a person of the same industry, I heard that it was just part of customer management. AhIt made my heart beat

J-Space I heard that you failed in digital nomad in Jeju

 

Seung-pil Choi I’d rather say I didn’t have accomplishment as a developer than it as a failure. I came up with only 10 lines of developing code for 4 weeks but instead, I did many other things. Hang out and have meetings as part of work. However in terms of developing, compare to Mangwon, the result is minimal. If you ask me why then this program(J-CCEI Stay Support Program in Jeju) will be abolished (laugh)

 

 I loved the people here. I hang out, felt the nature. The environment is really good and since there are people I can be with. I developed all alone but in a group like this, there were things I had to do with them. So I didn’t have time to do developing, but instead, I hang out a lot with good people. I think if I just work even in Jeju, it is my lost. I had a really good time here hanging out and resting. Can you still abolish this program(J-CCEI Stay Support Program in Jeju)? (laugh)

 

 I only brought my clothes for a week. Other people said if I am wearing my uniform because I was wearing the same thing the whole time. I’m not alone but also other friends were like that that we thought we would go back to Seoul after a week. However from the first day, with the other participants, we introduced ourselves and had a drink together and became close and that made me stay until the end. We became cohorts for each other. We were saying that since we met in this program, let’s finish it together. We were very close and had common understandings.

 

 As a result, as a developer, I have not much achievement. Instead, I met a lot of local companies as part of work and got positive feedbacks from them. While away from Seoul, I received news for investment and cooperation. These are still in the process but I feel like good things are happening because I am in Jeju. Also when I was in Seoul I refused the public speech and presentation of service opportunities but in Jeju, I accepted them all. In Seoul, the environment will be changed so it couldn’t be the same but still, my heart will be more opened compare to when I came here. I only saw slow people at the hospital and so it was really different for me to see people at café because they were cheerful. Then suddenly I met even more active and cheerful people in Jeju and stayed with them for a month and that gave me an optimistic energy. This is what I mean by I opened by heart. I am actually a bright person.

Seung-pil Choi I am dealing with natural lanuage but actually, I don't know about grmmar. So I am learning it again. There is no perfect person. 

 

 

 Seung-pil Choi’s trip service and chatbot in the process of development are very interesting but at the same time, all the people who met him in Jeju said they fell for him for his warm heart and humble humor. We will be expecting the next steps of trip matching service <Tripgrida> and chatbot builder <Botgrida>, which look like him!

 Bong-jun Jin and Jae-sung Lee came to Jeju with a clear mission, which is to find business opportunities and to test remote work. They are very detailed with their plan and a smart pair that they changed their partner every month to test the different results of remote work depending on the difference of the inclination and work type of the partners. Since they appear to enjoy (?) their time in Jeju so much that they are in danger of getting fired ()

 

 

J-Space I have heard that Play Auto itself is testing remote work that some adjustments have been made as a result, such as organization reformation and improvement in the environment, so how is it going so far and how did you handle your tasks in Jeju?

 

Bong-jun Jin Our Company has been in the industry for 12 years and has about 70 employees. We are mostly handling B2B (Business to Business) projects. When the company was first started, it didn’t have a strict work environment but the hierarchical structure was present. However, a horizontal structure was promoted when our CEO was replaced. The very first thing the new CEO did was to use English names in the company. I was top 4 in the company ranking but now that kind of hierarchy was abolished. So changes were brought into the organization that positions were abolished yet tasks were more specified. Also, there was a change in the office space that usually a person in a higher position uses a separate room located in the inner space for himself, but efforts to abolish downsides of the vertical structure were made by abolishing designated seats and running co-working space. Meeting room table was changed to a round table and designated individual tables were changed to a hexagonal table that it was designed to make each team sit together. Desktop computers were removed and replaced with laptops. In some cases, designated seats are allowed but aside from that the environment was created to allow us to work in cafes and got rid of with the concept of ‘individual desk’, because with the presence of ‘individual desk’, the environment would easily become under the vertical structure again.

 

 We are preparing to enter overseas markets and with that, there could be situations that our developers may need to work abroad. Our work here is to experiment for those potential situations, experimenting it in abroad is unrealistic so we are doing it here in Jeju. For remote work, supplementing device for the physically separated situation should be considered, so we are using Skype or Hangout for the conference calls. We could reach conveniently since we are using communication tool like Jandi, but there are shortcomings. It’s a communication through text so in times of emergency, it’s hard to communicate in comparison with meeting in person. Furthermore, we don’t exactly know the actual situation of headquarter and vice versa so there might be misunderstandings from it. Nonetheless, it is not a problem of a tool but a problem of a person and internal process so we consider it as a side effect of a transition period.

 

 We should continue to think about it. It’s too early to decide on whether it is good or bad but one good thing I thought of while working in a remote place is that there is stress coming from the conflict of interests with each department when working in the office, but there is no such thing here so it makes me emotionally stable by working with peaceful mind.

J-Space Play Auto must have a lot of developers, and they might need the optimized working space for them to work. Some developers we met through interviews shared that it took some time for them to adjust. So it was questionable if networking was necessary for them and besides, a lot of them seem to be an introvert.

 

Bong-jun Jin You’re right, Jae-sung Lee is actually a special case for a developer that he is very extrovert. Our own developers hate to transfer from their seating arrangements and prefer to work in a fully-equipped environment. So the developer who came with me last April, Sang-kwon Seo, had a hard time at the beginning. Developers need desktop monitors as many as three so coding with a small laptop screen itself was hard. As time goes by, he got used to it but perhaps, that’s because where he worked was here in Jeju that he could feel comfortable with it yet the actual environment was still a struggle. However, this buddy (Jae-sung Lee) is totally opposite.

 

Jae-sung Lee It is true but also for Sang-kwon, his field of specialty requires development with a fixed address, so to enter the server with security he needs to register IP. He can’t register IP everywhere he works so he needed to work in a designated place. On the other hand, for developing new things, a place doesn’t matter but rather a creative place for development is much needed. If the development is for maintenance, it requires concentration so working in one place could be more efficient. In fact, the advantage of digital nomad has the purpose of resulting in a creative performance and with that, it greatly helps my mind to be refreshed by transferring places. Therefore, this is suitable for me.

 

J-Space You have a lot to do in Jeju, right? You’ve met various people from the agricultural sector in Jeju, could you tell me about it? 

 

Jae-sung Lee I’ve received so many business cards. It was President Myeong-sil Kang, whom we met continuously and in-depth from the field of agriculture. We were introduced to President Myeong-sil Kang through the owner of the guesthouse for stay applicant, President Myeong-sil Kang used to be a vice present of a school and became a farmer and grows blueberries. Probably Present Myeong-sil Kang didn’t have a good connection with local residents in Jeju, so instead formed a union with people who became farmers and was offering education in order to expound on online channels. Education composed of blog posting, register for store farm, establish shopping mall called ‘modoo’ etc. We were able to get much information and to learn about the kind of value chain for the management. People in the agricultural sector are usually of old age and it was hard to approach them because, even though it's an era of IT, they were having a hard time with even blog posting. Nevertheless, people like President Myeong-sil Kang projected their strong need for online so we could focus on developing the specific service for them.

 

 Second of all, we went to Mureungoegatjip. We met Chang-wook Hong, the office head and learned about the business item called Koo-reo-mi aside from direct dealing from farming. Service for farmers was limited to direct dealing but after meeting them, we got the hope that we can develop other types of business models for farmers.

 

 Then, we met Ae-ja Kim of Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Tourism Association, who is in charge of marketing for experiencing agricultural village. This marketing was structured in a way that they offer experiencing agricultural village for free and with that many people come to experience it and buy one for two boxes of fruits from the farm in return. A lot of people are here for experience for a month and it was really good to meet different types of farmers in Jeju.

Bong-jun Jin To add on to it, we have a project with the University of Jeju. In Jeju, there are tourism contents related to museums, exhibits and leisure and these mainly get tourists through online. Our project is to provide a solution to make it easier for the content sellers in online. The reason why I came here in April was actually to do a market research here since I have no connections here. At first, I was introduced to people by the center but they were not directly related to the field. We were in the process of developing ways to find people with original contents and farmers can be one of them because aside from selling their products, they also manage services like experiencing agricultural sector so we approached them.

 

 Early in May, we met farm owners again and most of them were distributing their projects through direct dealing and that direct dealing was possible through their friends. Since the dealings were done from the pool of people of their own, there is no need for an online solution for them. In the beginning, we didn’t know about these things so we had a hard time in approaching them. We told them “you should make use of online” but it wasn’t working. So slowly and deeply we try to meet them and asked their difficulties and that’s how we found their need. We surely found their need but they don’t feel the need for expanding the online platform. Nonetheless, there is a demand on how to manage online platform but they are accustomed to the hardships already so they do not even recognize the fact that they are having a hard time with it. So, we didn’t hear any positive feedbacks from the farm owners. They said, “I think I don’t need this, until when can you do it for me? I can do the dealings by using what I have now!” However as we continue to contact with farmers, we finally got to meet the people mentioned above.

 

 One thing we newly acquired is that there are people who don’t feel the need for online platforms but also there are people who feel the need for devising online channels. An example would be the president Myeong-sil Kang and with like-minded people. We ask them to introduce other like-minded people and that’s how we continued until now. Right now, we will proceed with the project we want to do. This is not a pivoting but as we meet this kind of farm owners, we think that making programs for them could be a good idea so when I return to the headquarter I will organize the thought. They make active proposals to us and when we propose in return, they try to help us in a positive manner. In addition, the original targets are also being connected. In April, when we were starting, I tried to meet people I wanted to meet directly and it didn’t work out, but after experiencing it for a month, I, myself became more flexible. What made it work was actually when I try to listen to their hardships, instead of trying to listen to what I wanted to hear from them.

 

J-Space You mentioned about developing the solution with the University of Jeju through industrial-educational cooperation and thinking of doing it with students from Computer Engineering and even furthering it to hire them.

 

Bong-jun Jin There was a kick-off meeting with the University of Jeju in March this year, and in the process, we applied for stay application. In April, we went there to have a regular meeting, because they have a laboratory for Computer Engineering. We met the students from there, talk with them and talk while having barbecues together. We also have to do team building and so it was important to know who will fit for our company. Knowing what kind of concerns they have will help us to become flexible when the students are hired so I try talking with them as much as possible. We created separate group Kakaotalk chat room and hang out from time to time and talked to each other. We feel comfortable with each other now. At first, their personality was not exclusive but rather introvert so I was careful in dealing with them but now it became so much better.

 

J-Space I think you are good at this kind of activities, such as going to meet personally and trying things again.

 

Jae-sung Lee I hope even the developers also have a good understanding of the product, have business knowledge and try to experience all these. Later on, the position doesn’t matter but everyone will take their part in developing and planning a project as well.

 

J-Space You have a mind of a leader.

 

Bong-jun Jin That dude aspires to be president.

 행을 좋아해서 여행 서비스를 만들었고, 데이터를 연구하고 싶어서 챗봇을 개발하고 있는 최승필님. 이미 그는 사람들 사이에선 꽤나 알려진 사람 이었습니다. “<트립그리다> 개발자가 제주에 온다고?” 그러게, 제주에 왔을까요?

최승필 제주에서 제가 좀 한가봐요. 제주가 기운이 좋은 것 같아요. <런치합시다> 때 만난 멘토님에게 사업계획서 까지는 아니고 어떤 서비스를 만들고 있는지 소개 자료를 달라고 요청 받았는데, 아직 못 보냈어요. 어제 체류 지원 프로그램 마지막 네트워킹 발표자료 만드느라고. (웃음)

 

J-Space 그만큼 인공지능이나 챗봇이 요즘 사람들이 관심 키워드 같아. 최승필님은 관심을 가지게 기가 나요?


 

최승필 이세돌하고 알파고가 아웅다웅 하기 전부터 하고 있었어요. 지금 인공지능이 대세가 된 것이 이세돌과 알파고가 바둑을 했던 이후잖아요. 하지만 인공지능 관련 연구는 많은 곳에서 이전부터 꾸준히 진행하고 있었던 분야에요. 사람들이 그 전까지는 인공지능이 어떤건지 잘 몰랐는데, 이세돌과 알파고 대결 이후로 관심을 갖기 시작하면서 크게 이슈가 된거 같아요. 저희는 전부터 <트립그리다> 라는 데이터 기반 여행 서비스를 준비 하고 있었어요. 데이터를 이용해서 개인에 맞는 여행지를 추천해주고 일정을 추천해 주는 서비스를 개발하고 있었고, 그것을 요즘 챗봇이라고 불리우는 대화형 인터페이스에 적용하고 있었어요. 저희가 개발 할 때는 아무도 이해를 못 하던 분야였어요. 소개 할 때마다 대화형 인터페이스에 기능을 적용하겠다는 이야기를 해왔는데 대부분이 너희가 하는게 뭔지 모르겠다, 여행 서비스를 만드는거야, 만드는거야? 라고 되묻곤 했어요. 그런데 구글이 인공지능 기술을 내놨고, 지금은 4차산업이다 하면서 완전 트렌드가 되고 있어요. 페이스북이나 라인 같은 팅 플랫폼에 챗봇 기능들을 제공해 주기 시작하고 챗봇이 대중화 되고 있는 분위기에요. 저희는 오히려 타이밍이 맞은거죠. 원래 하려고 했었기도 하고 새로 만들려고 했는데, 페이스북 메신저와 같은 기존 플랫폼에 으면 되니까요. 페이스북, 라인, 레그램에서는 다 그 기능을 지원해요. 이제는 저 관심을 보여주세요. 너희가 하는게 이런거냐 하면서.

 

 챗봇은 시대의 름인거 같아요. 중국의 위챗 같은 경우를 보면 별도 필요 없이 다 되고 있어요, 결제도 다 되고. 저희 서비스를 어떻게 확장시킬 수 있을지 고민하다 나온 것이 대화형 인터페이스에요. 요즘엔 앱 다운로드 수도 줄어들고, 다운로드 받아도 삭제 수가 더 많다고 하잖아요, 필요한 앱만 쓰고. 그런데 채팅 같은 경우는 다 쓰잖아요. 카카오톡 쓰고, 페이스북 메신저 쓰고. 그래서 저희가 만든 앱 기능을 대화형 인터페이스에 적용하면 앱을 별도로 다운받지 않아도 되고, 유저들이 새로운 인터페이스에 적응하기 위해 새로 학습을 안해도 되니깐 접근이 용이하지 않을까 그런 고민들을 했어요. 사실 앱도 있긴 해요. 작년에 베트남 가서 필드테스트 해봤는데 안 쓸 것 같더라고요, 어려워서. 저희가 만든 앱인데도 기능들이 복잡하다 보니까 너무 어려운거에요. 그래서 계속 기능별로 분리하고 소 시키다보니, 대화형 인터페이스에 붙이는걸 생각하게 되었어요.

 

 기능별로 챗봇을 만들다보니 반복되는 작업들이 많이 발생을 하게 되더라고요. 그걸 좀더 간소화 시키면 어떨까 생각하다 반복작업들을 자동화 시켜주는 기능도 개발하게 되었어요. 이것을 더라고 소개해요. 빌더를 이용하면 코딩을 모르는 일반인들도 별도의 코딩 없이 챗봇을 만들 수 있어요. 지금은 특정 업체에서 외주를 받아서 챗봇을 만들어 주잖아요. 근데 나중에 저희가 만든 빌더를 쓰면 기업이나 개인이 직접 코딩 없이 챗봇을 만들 수 있도록 진행해보려고 해요. 사실 아직까지 챗봇으로 비즈니스로 풀 수 있는 위가 장히 제한적이라고 보지만 충분히 가능성은 있다고 생각해요. 저는 제주에서 그것을 한 번 실험해보려고 왔고요, 가능성에 대해서. 유행을 따르는게 아니라 순리대로 진행 하고 있다고 생각해요.

J-Space APEC(제교육협력원)에서 진행하는 계대회에 심사 요청도 받았다고 했죠.

 

최승필 그게 제가 여행하다가 만났던 인도네시아 분이 계세요. 여행하는 도중에 제가 그 분이 어려운 상황에 처했을 때, 도와 드렸다가 친해졌어요. 그 분이 친한 한국인 지인을 연결해줬는데 그분이 그 APEC 관계자였어요. 그 분께서 제가 진행하는 과정들을 지켜 본거 같아요. 그래서 제가 하는 작업들을 보고 심사위원으로 추천을 해주신거에요. 아시아 태평양 지역의 학생들 대상으로 하는 국제대회가 있는데, 심사위원으로 참여했으면 좋겠다고 했어요. 그런데 그 당시 제가 심사를 할 만 한 능력이 안 될 것 같다, 영어로 심사를 해야해서 안된다고 거절을 했어요. 두 번째 제의 때에는 통역을 여 주신대요. 그래도 아닌 것 같았어요.

 

제가 이 이야기를 하고 싶은 것이, 제가 사실 마음이 닫혀 있었어요. 혼자 개발 일을 한지가 오래 돼서, 제가 하는 일이 맞는지 아닌지 판단하기가 조금 어려웠었거든요. 구를 판단할 수 있는 입장도 위치도 아니고요. 좋은 제의를 저한테 해주셨음에도 불구하고, 저 스스로가 닫혀 있어서내가 과연 해도 되는 걸까라는 생각을 했었어요. 그런데 제주에 와서 많이 관심을 가져주시기까 내가 하고 있는 것들이 그래도 누군가에게 도움이 될 수 있겠구나, 잘 하진 못하지만 내 능을 필요로 하는 사람들이 있을 수 있겠다라는 생각을 하게 되었어요. 조금씩 마음을 열기 시작했죠. 최근에 또 세 번 째로 제의 해주셨는데 저를 좀 더 배려 해주셨어요. 그래서 이번에는 제가 한다고 했어요. 올해 8월 부산에서 진행하는 대회에 기술심사역으로 참여 할 정이에요.

 

J-Space 제주에 와서 마음이 열렸네요. 서비스도 그렇고, 만나는 사람도 그렇고 여행과 관련이 있는 것 같아요. 여행 좋아하나봐요.

 

최승필 제가 회사를 그만두고…


J-Space 회사도 다녔나요?(매우 의아함)

 

최승필 저 회사 다녔었어요. 사회인이었어요. 회사 그만두고 지금까지 번 돈으로 배낭 하나 메고 돌아다녔어요. 평소 꿈이었거든요. 군대 전역 후 떠난 배낭여행이 추억이 되어 치열했던 20대를 버티게 한 것 처럼, 30대를 맞이하는 저를 위한 선물이기도 했고요. 원래 1년 정도 생각하고 떠났는데 6개월 정도 돌다 다시 돌아왔어요. 단순히 여행의 적보다도 필드 테스트도 하면서 이것저것 현지에서 체크도 하면서 다녔어요. 나름 시장 조사겸 돌아 다녔어요. 나는 놀러온게 아니 라는 심정으로 다닌거 같아요. 제가 와이파이만 쓰거든요. 서울에서도 와이파이 잡아서 써요. 왜냐하면 <트립그리다> 서비스가 로벌 서비스를 목표로 하는데 우리나라는 어딜 가든 인터넷 잘 되잖아요, 해외에는 안되는 곳이 많아요. 인도 자이살메르 사막에서도, 안나푸르나 등반하면서도 와이파이 잡으면서 다녔어요. 테스트 해보고, 이런 것 필요할 것 같다 메모 해놓고, 한국 가면 어떻게 만들어야지 하고 구상하고 다녔어요. 그런데 안나푸르나 내려오는 길에 아버지가 쓰러지셨다는 소식 고 바로 한국와서 1년간 간병했거든요. 간병 하면서 시간을 지내다 보니 전에는 없었는데, 그 사이에 이미 제가 만들고 싶은 서비스들이 많이 생겼더라고요. 그만큼 개인 여행이 활성화 되었고 많은 사람들이 필요로 생각을 했을거 같아요. 그렇다고 그냥 포기 하는것 보다 내 상황이 어쩔수 없는 상황이고, 내가 여기서 할 수 있는게 없지만 어차피 시간도 있으니 공부한다는 생각으로 평소 기획한 내용들을 부담없이 하나씩 만들기 시작했어요

 

 서비스 이야기만 했네요. 저 여행 좋아해요. 제 버킷리스트가 1위부터 5위가 다 여행에 관한 것들이었어요. 근데 퇴사후 1위부터 5위 버킷을 다 해봤어요. 혼자 배낭여행 해보기, 해외에서 한달 살아보기, 안나푸르나 올라가보기, 사막에서 별보기… 아! 하나는 실패했어요. 서른두살 이 전에 결혼하기였는데 이미 2년이 지났어요.

최승필 퇴사하고 6개월 간 여행 했어요. 안나푸르나 가기 전에 태국에 있었는데 에서 우연히 어떤 분을 만났어요. 제가 여행하는 것도 좋아하지만 그 지역 환경이나 문제에 대해서도 관심이 많아요. 태국에 코끼리 트래킹 체험이 있잖아요. 코끼리 타고 트래킹하는 거요. 그런데 그런 코끼리들이 사육 당하면서 평생 고통을 받으면서 지다는 이야기를 들어서 거부감이 들었어요. 그래서 저는 반대로 코끼리 생태공원이란 곳을 가려고 했어요. 다쳐서 버려진 코끼리 들을 치료해주는 곳이에요. 코끼리 트래킹이 10만원이면 여기도 10만원이에요. 같은 돈을 지불하더라도 저는 타는 것보다 코끼리를 치료 하는 곳을 가고 었어요. 그 돈으로 이곳에선 치료 약을 사고 이를 요, 그 것도 돈을 지불한 사람이 직접이요. 저는 이 곳을 가려고 했고, 여행 중 만난 동생들은 트래킹을 하러 가려고 했어요. 일행들끼리 그 이야기를 하고 있는데, 어느 분이 에서 갑자기 주 사주고 싶다고 2병을 사주시더라고요. 거기가 빠이라는 동네였는데 그 동네가 작아요. 시나 다시 만나면 대접해드려야지 했는데, 다음날 길에서 우연히 만났어요. 그래서 약속을 잡고 저녁에 다시 만났어요. 그 분과 여행이란 주제로 많은 이야기를 나눴어요. 제가 이야기한 내용들이 공정여행이란 사실도 알게 되었어요. 그분께서 많은 여행을 다니고 많은 사람들을 만났는데 은 청년들이 순수하게 공정여행에 대해서 이야기를 하고 있어서 신기하고 반가웠다고. 그래서 술을 사주고 싶었다라고 하셨어요.


 그 분이 저에게 승필이의 여행의 마지막은 어디가 됐으면 좋겠니? 라고 물으셨어요. 저는 안나푸르나 가는게 꿈이라고 했어요. 저는 안나푸르나는 전문가들만 가는건 줄 알았거든요. 그런데 그 분이나는 너의 여행의 끝이 너의 꿈이었으면 좋겠다라고 말씀해 주셨어요. 드라마 속 대사 같잖아요. 근데 더 진건 바로 그 자리에서 려졌어요. 중국이랑 한국에 전화를 해서 팀을 꾸렸어요. 저 때문에요. 알고보니 평소 히말라야 트래킹을 하시던 분이셨더라고요. 두 달 뒤에 보자라고 하시고 우린 어졌어요. 그리고 두달 후 인도를 던 저와 그 분과 일행들을 네팔에서 만나게 되었고, 정말 안나푸르나를 함께 가게 되었어요. 열흘동안 어요. 안나푸르나 이스캠프에서 별보고 울었어요. 아직도 꿈인거 같아요. 그런데 저는 그 순간 모든걸 얻었다고 생각했는데 아니었어요. 제가 가고자 하는 꿈을 이뤘잖아요. 너무 기분 좋은 마음에 내려오는데, 전화가 70게 온거에요. 불안했어요. 무슨일이 있다는 직감이 들었어요. 한국에 전화하니 아버지께서 쓰러지셨다고 해요. 망적이었어요. 네팔 국내 항공편이 없어서 100달러 주고 시 타고 하게 카트만두로 넘어 갔어요. 설산을 택시타고 넘었어요. 그리고 중국 거쳐서 한국으로 들어왔어요. 진짜 미친 듯이 온 것 같아요. 왜냐하면 아버지와의 마지막일 수 있다는 생각이 불현듯 들었거든요. 그러고 한국 들어와서 1년 정도 병원에서 아버지 간병을 했어요. 간병하면서 만든게 <트립그리다> 에요.

 

 

 

<온라인 여행 매칭 서비스 '트립그리다' 메인>

 

 

J-Space <트립그리다>라는 여행서비스가 참 어울리는 것 같아요. 4년간 혼자 했다고요.


 

최승필 1년간 병원에서 아버지 간병하면서 간병인 침대에서 작업을 했어요. 퇴원하시고 거동이 불편하시니 제가 집 근처를 벗어날 수가 없었어요. 그래서 제가 집에서 케어를 해드려야겠다고 생각했고, 한동안은 아버지 곁에 있으면서 혼자 집에서 작업을 했어요. 중간에 이직 제의도 있었어요, 인터뷰도 했고. 그런데 근무지가 해외라서 어쩔수 없더라고요. 그때 인터뷰했던 곳에서 태국에 비즈니스 플랫폼을 런칭하는데 개발자가 필요하다고 해서 만났어요. 제가 태국에도 3개월정도 지내다 왔고, 개별적으로 여행 서비스 개발도 진행하다보니 추천을 받게 됐고 인터뷰를 했었는데, 아버지 케어 때문에 갈 수가 없었어요.

 

 그 후로 그때 인터뷰 하신 분 하고도 친해져서, 집에서 1년 정도 개발 하면서 다시 한 번 만났는데, 개발자가 집에서 개발하면 집중이 안되지 않냐고 했어요. 사실 개발자들 대부분이 그럴거에요. 저도 새벽 시간에 조용히 개발하고, 아침 6시나 7시쯤 자면 11시쯤 일어나요. 제 시간이 별로 없더라고요. 그런데 제가 그러면 또 아버지도 저를 안쓰럽게 보세요. TV에 청년 실업 문제 매일 나오는데 아들은 방구석에서 밤새 컴퓨터만 하니까, 아들 한 번 보시고, TV 한 번 보시고 안타까워 하시더라고요. 저는 그런게 아니라, 나름대로 차근차근 준비하고 있는건데. 당장 성과가 없으니 티도 못내고 그러다보니 눈치가 많이 보이더라고요. 아무튼 그런 상황들을 이해하신 그 분이 카페에서 작업을 하는게 차라리 낫지 않겠냐라고 해서 카페 3개월치를 충전해서 주셨어요. 나중에 제가 폰이 고장나서 전화를 못받는 상황이 되었는데 그때도 개발자가 핸드폰이 이러면 되냐면서 핸드폰도 사주시더라고요. 그러면서 무언의 압박을 계속 주시더라고요. 3개월 해보고 그때 가서도 아니면 그만두고 회사 다녀라였어요. 같이 일하자는 의미였는지 모르겠지만 이제는 포기 하신거같아요. 저는 평소에 스타벅스를 다니지 않았고, 저렴한 커피 있는 곳 찾아다녔는데, 그 분이 스타벅스에서 결제를 해주셔서 제가 졸지에 된장남이 됐죠.(웃음)

 

 근데 카페에서 작업하는게 오히려 좋았던거 같아요. 제가 병원에서 1년 있고, 집에서 1년 있고 하다보니 대인기피증도 비슷하게 생기고 우울증 같은 느낌도 생겼었거든요. 그런데 내색은 못했어요. 아버지 케어할 때 방해될까봐. 그런데 카페에서 그걸 조금씩 극복했어요. 사람들 카페에 앉아 있으면 그 사이 빈자리에 앉지를 못했어요. 근데 용기 내서 앉아 보고. 그러다보니 이젠 내 집 같이 편해졌어요. 그렇게 2년 동안 카페에서 작업했고, 사무실은 따로 안 알아봤어요. 제가 수익이 없는 상태에서 모았던 돈도 다 쓰고 있으니까. 카페에 아침 열한시에 가서 저녁 열한시에 퇴근하고. 매니저가 저 되게 좋아해요. 아무 짓 안하고 한 자리에서 깔끔하게 일하고 가니까. 저는 퇴근할 때 카페 마무리하는거 도와주고 가요. 사람들이 놀랬을거에요. 쟤는 뭔데 같이 출근하고 같이 퇴근하지?

 

 그리고 처음에는 혼자 시작했지만 지금은 뜻이 맞는 친구와 함께 진행하고 있어요저희는 서로 각자 지역에서 리모트 워킹 중이에요. 개발자들은 간섭 받는걸 싫어해요.

 

J-Space 하루종일 있는게 가능한가요?

 

최승필 사실 민폐. 사실 커피값 무시못해요. 수익 없이 버틸려니깐 진상이 되곤 해요. 그래서 직원분에게 여쭤봤어요. 근데 괜찮다고 치 보지 라고 해요. 오히려 려를 해주셔서 감사한 마음으로 다니곤 했어요. 그렇게 친해지다보니 직원분 에 공대다니시는 생이 계시는데 가끔 자리 아서 저에게 업관련 고민도 이야기하시고 과제에 대해서도 물어보기도 하고. 옆자리에서 같이 공부도 하고 그랬어요. 제가 커피 잘 모르거든요. 그래서 일 아메리카노만 시키니깐. 다른것도 마셔보라고 메뉴판 들고와서 이것저것 설명도 해주시고. 나름 민폐고객은 아니었던듯해요. 각이었는지 모르겠지만

 

 망원동 스타벅스가 독특해요. 거기에 1인 가구가 많아요처럼 개발하시는 분들도 계시고, 디자인, 상 작업하는 사람들도 많고, 대랑 합정에 스타트업이 은근 많아요. 1인 기획자, 1인 개발자 같이 1인 제작자도 많아요. 다른 스타벅스는 그렇지 은거 같은데 여기는 조금 특이한거같아요. 저 같은 사람들이 많나봐요. 가끔 동질감도 느껴져요. 그렇다고 저는 말은 못 걸어요. 을 가려가지고. 그런데 년 동안 매일 보는 분들이 계신데, 어느 순간 페이스북이나  지에 사진이 올라오더라고요. 뭔가 다 창조적인 일들을 하는 분들이셨어요. 처음엔 제가 눈치를 봤었는데, 다 그런 분들만 있다는거 , 이제는 근한다고 그래요. 스타벅스로 출근한다고. 직원분들도 좀 게 오면 오늘은 늦게 오셨네요라고 되물어요. 카페 매니저들이 마치 코워킹스페이스 매니저처럼 고객관리 잘해요. 제가 제주도 간다니깐 선물이랑 지도 써줬어요. 처음엔 설레였는데. 같은 업종에 계시는 분께 여쭤보니 단골 고객 관리라고 하더라고요. 아… 설레었는데….

J-Space 그런데 제주에서 지털노마드는 실패 했다고….

 

최승필 실패보다는 제가 개발자로서 제주에서 과는 없었던 것 같아요. 개발코드는 4 10줄정? 그 대신 다른걸 많이 했죠. 기도 하고 업무적으미팅도 많이 하고. 개발하는 부분원동 스타벅스 만큼의 성과는 없는것 같아요. 그러냐고 어보시면..  프로그램(체류지원프로그램 '제주다움') 없어지는데….()

 

 사람들이 무 좋았어요. 놀러다니고, 자연을 느끼. 경적으로 좋잖아요. 그리고 함께 있는 사람들이 있으니까. 는 계속 혼자 개발을 해왔는데 이렇게 단체생활을 하다 보니까, 이게 휩쓸려서라도 어울려야 하는게 있잖아요. 그러다 보니 개발할 수 있는 시간은 없었고, 좋은 분들하고 좋은 많이 놀러다녔죠. 제주까지 와서 너무 일만 하면 해인 거 같아요. 잘 놀다, 다 가는거 같아요, 저는. 이 정도면 이 프로그램 없앨 수 있나요?(웃음)

 

 저 도 일주일치만 가지고 왔어요. 같이 지내던 분이 니폼 고 다닌다고 할 정도로 입던 옷만 입었어요. 저도 그렇고, 주변 친구들도 그렇고, 일주일만 하고 서울 다시 거라고 생각하고 있었거든요. 만약 제가 하는 업에 해가 상황이 되면 다시 서울 가야지 하고 거거든요. 첫날 함께 참여 하신 분들하고 인사하고 도 한 잔 하면서 이야기하다보니 친해지게 되었어요. 그래서 하루 정도 더 있다 까 하다가 까지 있어버렸네요. 서로에게 동기가 되었던거 같아요. 어쨌든 리가 제주에서 체류지원 프로그램으로 만났으니까, 끝까지 같이 해보자 이렇게 이야기를 많이 했어요. 되게 끈했어요. 유대감이 있었어요.

 

 결과적으로는 개발자지만 개발에 대한 성과는 없었어요. 대신 업무적으로 많은 지 업체들을 만났고, 정적인 피드백을 받게 되었어요. 서울을 떠나 있으니 가운 자 제의 소식도 있었고, 제휴 제안도 있었고, 아직 진행형이긴 하지만 제주 오고나서 가 잘 리는거 같아요. 저한테는 기회가 많이 생겼던 것 같아요. 서울에 있을 에는 연 제의나 서비스 발 제의가 와도 사양하곤 했는데, 제주에선 수용했던거 같아요. 서울가면 환경이 바뀌니까 여기서와 비슷하게 지낼 없겠지만, 오기 전 보다 마음이 열릴 것 같긴 해요. 원에서 간병하면서 상 느린 사람들만 보다가, 카페을때 사람들이 활기차서 리감이 있었거든요. 그런 상황에서 자기, 더 활동적인 사람들과 한 을 함께 보내니까 자연스럽게 그 에너지가 저에게도 긍정적으로 전달이 되었던것 같아요. 마음의 을 열었다고 한게 그런거에요. 저도 원래 은 사람인데.

 제주에서 비즈니스 기회를 찾고 리모트워크를 실험하라는 명확한 미션을 가지고 온 플레이오토 진봉준님과 이재성님. 파트너의 성향과 업무에 따라 리모트워크가 어떻게 달라질지 한 달 씩 파트너를 바꿔서 실험해 봤을 정도로 꼼꼼하고 스마트한 콤비였는데요. 허나, 제주에서 너무 노는 것(?)처럼 보여서 회사에서 잘릴 위기라는데(...)

 

 

J-Space 플레이오토 자체에서도 리모트워크를 실험하고 있고 그에 따라 조직 개편이나 환경 개선이 있었다고 들었는데, 회사 차원에서는 어떻게 진행되고 있는지, 제주에서 업무는 어떻게 해나가셨는지 궁금해요.

 

진봉준 저희 회사는 업력이 12년 정도 됐고 70여명 정도의 직원이 있는데요. B2B 개념의 사업을 많이 하고 있어요. 설립 초기에도 딱딱한 분위기는 아니었는데 다만, 수직적인 분위기가 존재했어요. 그런데 중간에 저희 대표님이 바뀌면서, 수평적인 문화를 지향하게 됐고요. 그 분이 가장 먼저 했던 것이 영어 이름 쓰는 것이었어요. 제가 회사에서 원래 서열 4위였는데 이제는 그런 직위가 없어졌어요. 그렇게 직급을 파괴하되, 업무 단위는 세분화 했고, 조직의 변화를 줬던거죠. 그리고 공간의 변화가 있었어요. 일반적으로 사무실은 가장 직위가 높은 사람이 가장 안쪽의 독실을 쓰거나 하잖아요. 그런데 자리 배치를 다 파괴하고, 코워킹스페이스도 운영하고, 수직적인 문화에서 나오는 폐해들을 많이 없애려고 했어요. 회의실 탁자도 원탁, 지정자리도 테이블이 육각형으로 바뀌어서 팀 별로 앉게 되어 있고, 데스크탑도 없고 모두 랩탑으로 바꿨어요. 이렇게 지정자리를 두기도 하는데, 그 외에도 카페에서 일할 수 있도록 분위기를 만들고 개인 책상이라는 개념을 없앴어요. 왜냐하면 개인 책상을 둔다고 하면 수직적인 구조가 그냥 나오니까.

 

 그리고 저희도 해외 진출을 준비하고 있어서 저희 개발자들이 다른 나라에서 일할 수 있는 상황이 곧 다가올 수 있잖아요. 그런데 그걸 아직 실험해보기에는 무리가 있으니, 제주에서 실험을 해보는거죠. 리모트워크는 물리적으로 떨어진 상황에서 얼마나 그런 것들을 보완해줄 수 있는 장치가 있냐 하는것도 고려 해야 하는데, 저희가 컨퍼런스콜은 '스카이프'나 '행아웃'을 활용하고 있고요. '잔디' 같은 커뮤니케이션 툴을 쓰고 있어서 편하게 갈 수 있긴 한데 단점은 있어요. 어쨌든 텍스트로 전달이 되다보니 긴급한 상황에서 대면 하는 것보다 의사 전달이 잘 안되는 경우가 있어요. 또 저희도 지금 본사 상황을 잘 모르고, 본사에서도 저희 상황을 잘 몰라서 생기는 오해들도 있을 것이고요. 다만 그게 툴의 문제가 아니라, 사람이 문제고, 내부 프로세스의 문제라고 여기고 있어서 과도기 안의 부작용이라고 생각하고 있어요.

 

 고민은 계속 해봐야 할 것 같아요. 좋다, 아니다는 판단하기 이르고 제주라는 원격지에서 두 달동안 근무하면서 긍정적으로 생각했던 것은, 아무래도 회사에 있다 보면 각 부서의 이해관계 때문에 심리적으로 스트레스 받는게 있거든요. 그런데 여기는 그런게 없다보니, 마음 편히 일하는 것에 대한 정서적인 안정감이 있는 것 같아요.

J-Space 플레이오토에도 개발자들이 많을텐데, 개발자들은 오히려 업무하기 최적의 장소가 필요할 수도 있잖아요. 저희가 몇 번 인터뷰를 통해서 만나봤던 개발자들은 적응하는데 시간이 좀 걸렸다고 하더라고요. 굳이 개발자가 네트워킹이 필요한지에 대해서도 의문이고, 내향적인 분들이 더 많은 것 같고요.

 

진봉준 , 맞아요. 이재성님은 굉장히 외향적인 개발자라 좀 특이한 케이스죠. 저희 회사 개발자들도 자리 옮기는거 굉장히 싫어하고, 갖춰진 환경에서 일하는 것을 좋아해요. 4월에 저랑 먼저 왔던 개발자인 서상권님은 그래서 초반에 힘들어 했어요. 개발자들은 많으면 모니터 세 개가 필요한데, 노트북의 작은 화면으로 코딩하는 것 자체를 너무 힘들어 했어요. 시간이 지나면서 익숙해지긴 했는데, 그게 이 곳이 제주라 마음의 안정을 느낄 수 있어서 어느 정도 상쇄가 됐던 것이지, 실제 환경에 대한 부분은 힘들어 했던 것 같아요. 그런데 이 친구(이재성)는 성향이 완전 달라서.

 

이재성 그런 것도 있는데 상권님은 개발 분야가 주소지를 고정시켜 놓고 하는 개발이라서, 그 서버에 보안접속을 하려면 IP등록을 해야돼요. 그런데 IP를 일하는 장소마다 등록할 수 없으니까 그것 때문에 한 곳에서 해야 했던 것이고. 신규로 개발 해야 하는 것이라면 장소에 구애받지 않고, 크리에이티브한 개발이 더 필요 하겠죠그런데 유지보수 개발 분야라면, 집중도 있게 해야 하니까 한 곳에서 하는게 더 효율적이겠고요. 사실 디지털노마드의 장점은 크리에이티브한 퍼포먼스를 내야하는 목적이 있기 때문에, 장소를 옮기면서 리프레쉬하는게 마인드에 도움이 굉장히 많이 돼요. 그래서 저한테는 잘 맞고요.

 

J-Space 제주에서 해야 할 업무들도 많았죠? 주로 제주지역 농업 분야의 다양한 사람들을 만나셨는데, 이야기 들려주세요.

 

이재성 명함 진~짜 많이 받았어요. 농업 쪽으로 가장 깊게 계속 만나봤던 분은 풀개협동조합의 강명실 대표님이에요. 이 분은 체류지원자들의 숙소인 간드락게스트하우스 대표님 소개로 갔는데, 원래 학교 교감선생님이었다가 귀농해서 블루베리 농사 짓고 계세요. 그런데 제주도민과 커넥션이 좋지는 않으셨나 봐요. 그래서 귀농한 분들과 조합을 만들고 온라인채널 쪽으로 확장을 하려고 블로그 포스팅이나, 스토어팜 입점이나, ‘모두’라는 쇼핑몰 구축이나 이런 것들을 서로 알려주고 교육을 진행하고 있었어요. 그래서 저희가 여러 정보를 얻을 수 있었고, 어떤 밸류체인을 갖고 진행을 하고 있는지 알 수 있었어요. 농업 쪽은 다 나이대가 있으시잖아요. 요즘은 IT시대인데 사실상, 아직 농민분들은 블로그 포스팅 하는것 조차도 어려워 하시니까, 접근하는게 참 힘들었거든요. 그런데 이런 분들은 온라인에 대한 좀 더 강력한 니즈를 표방해주셔서 저희가 어떤 서비스를 만들어야겠다라고 포커싱할 수 있었던 것 같아요.

 

 두 번째로는 무릉외갓집 갔었거든요. 무릉외갓집에 홍창욱 실장님 만나고. 농사에서 직거래만 하는 것이 아니라 꾸러미라는 사업아이템이 있었어요. 농민들에게 서비스를 할 만 한 것이 직거래 정도로 제한적이었는데, 이 분들을 보면서 좀 더 자유로운 비즈니스 모델을 구상할 수 있겠다라는 희망을 얻었어요.

 

 그 다음은 제주특별자치도관광협회의 김애자님이라고, 농촌 체험으로 마케팅 하는 분이에요. 농촌 체험을 무료로 진행하면서, 여러 사람들이 와서 농촌 체험을 하고, 과일을 한 두 상자씩 사가는 마케팅 구조로 되어 있더라고요. 한 달 체험하러 오는 분들이 엄청 많고. 이렇게 제주에서 색다른 농민들을 많이 만날 수 있어서 정말 좋았던 것 같아요.

진봉준 부연설명을 좀 드리면, 저희가 제주대학교와 함께 하고 있는 프로젝트가 있어요. 제주도 내에 박물관, 전시회, 레져 관련 관광컨텐츠가 있고 온라인 모객을 주로 하고 있는데, 이런 컨텐츠를 판매자들이 온라인에서 좀 더 편하게 할 수 있게끔 솔루션을 만드려고 하고 있어요. 제가 처음에 4월에 온 목적도, 제가 제주에 연고가 전혀 없어서 시장 조사 차원에서 내려왔고요. 처음엔 센터 차원에서 매칭을 많이 해주셨는데 사실상 다이렉트로 관련이 있는 분들은 아니었거든요. 저희는 원천 컨텐츠를 보유하고 있는 분들을 찾기 위해서 계속 루트를 뚫어가는 과정이었고요. 그 중에 농장주도 포함이 되는거죠. 왜냐하면 이 분들은 직접 생산한 것들을 판매하기도 하지만, 농장체험 같은 것도 운영을 하고 있으니 접근을 했었어요.

 

 5월 초에도 농장주들을 만났고 대다수 직거래로 유통을 하고 있었는데, 그 직거래가 지인들을 통해서였어요. 본인이 가지고 있는 지인 pool 안에서 거래가 되다보니, 사실상 이런 온라인 솔루션에 대한 니즈가 없는거에요. 처음엔 저희가 잘 모르고 어렵게 다가갔어요, '온라인 하셔야죠'. 그런데 아닌거더라고요. 이 분들의 애로사항이 뭐지라고 스스로 물으면서 조금씩 깊게 더 만나보면서, 그들의 니즈를 찾은거죠. 찾긴 찾았는데, 이 분들이 온라인 확장에 대한 니즈는 없어요. 다만, 운영에 대한 애로사항은 있어요. 근데 그런 부분들이 너무 익숙해져버려서, 어렵다는 것도 인식을 잘 못하시는거에요. 그래서 처음에 농장주 분들한테서는 긍정적인 피드백을 못 받았어요. 굳이, 이런거 필요 없을 것 같은데? 어디까지 해줄 수 있어? 지금처럼 해도 거래 다 돼! 이런것들이 있었는데 계속 컨텍을 계속해 나가는 과정에서 아까 같은 분들을 만나게 된거죠.

 

 새롭게 안거는, 그런 분들도 있는거고, 그것과 다르게 온라인 채널 운영을 필요로 한다는 분도 계시다는걸 알았어요. 예를 들면 강명실 대표님이고. 그런 분들이 모여 있으니, 다른 분들도 소개시켜 주세요라고 해서 계속 이어져 왔던거에요. 지금은 저희가 하고자 하는 프로젝트는 진행할거에요. 오히려 이런 농장주 분들을 만나다 보니 피봇팅은 아니지만, 이분들을 위한 프로그램을 만들어도 괜찮겠다라는 느낌이 있고 본사 들어가서 조금 더 정리를 하려고 해요. 이 분들도 굉장히 적극적으로 저희에게 제안을 하기도 하고, 반대로 저희가 제안을 드렸을 때 긍정적으로 도움을 주려고 하기도 하시고요. 여기서 또 이어진게, 원래 타겟도 연결이 되고 있어요. 저희도 처음 4월에는 다이렉트로 제가 원하는 분들 만나려고 애쓰다보니 좋은 결과가 아니었던 것 같고, 한 달 경험하다보니 저 자체도 유연해진 부분도 있고. 제가 듣고 싶은 대답을 들으려고 한게 아니라, 그분들이 겪고 있는 애로사항을 저희가 체험하면서 스킨쉽을 하다보니 잘 풀려나갔던 것 같아요.

 

J-Space 제주대학교와 산학협력으로 솔루션을 개발하고 있다고 했는데 컴퓨터공학과 학생들과 개발을 하려고 생각중이고, 나중에 취업까지 연결시키려 하신다고요.

 

진봉준 제주대학교는 올해 3월에 킥오프미팅을 진행했거든요, 돌아가는 과정에 체류지원에 참여하게 됐던 것이고. 4월에 제주대학교 교수님과 학생들을 주기적으로 만나려고 갔었고, 컴퓨터공학과 연구실이 있거든요. 그쪽 학생들과 만나서 얘기하고 고기 구워먹고 그러면서 이야기를 많이 나눌 수 있었어요. 저희도 팀 빌딩을 해야 하는데 어떤 친구가 저희와 잘 맞을지, 어떤 고민을 하고 있는지 알아야 회사에서 채용을 했을 때 유연하게 할 수 있는거니까, 대화를 많이 했어요. 따로 단톡방을 만들어서, 중간중간 만나서 놀기도 하고, 이야기 하고 있어요. 지금은 편해진 관계. 처음에는 제주도 친구들이 성향이 배타적이라기 보단, 소심해요. 내향적이고. 그래서 처음엔 조심스러웠는데, 지금은 한결 많이 편해졌어요.

 

J-Space 그런 영업을 잘 하시는 것 같아요. 직접 찾아가고, 만나고, 다시 시도하고.

 

이재성 개발자도 제품에 대한 이해가 있고, 영업도 무엇인지 알고, 그런걸 다 겪고 해봤으면 좋겠어요. 나중에는 포지션을 따지는 것이 아니라 다 개발하고 기획도 하고.
